This past week my wife (Brianne) and I announced we are pregnant with our first child, who is due to be born in late April 2015. It is an exhilarating and terrifying reality. I cannot believe that I am going to be a daddy.

It’s fantastic!

With that amazing news in mind, I wanted to share three things I have already discovered about God’s amazing love in the midst of discovering I am going to be a dad.

He Loved You Before You Knew Him

I cannot explain it. I cannot fully comprehend it. I am at a loss for words. But when I think about my baby boy or girl—when I pray for them, think about them, dream about them—I feel an incomprehensible love for them.

I love them and they have yet to know me. I have yet to say “hello, I’m your daddy” to them. Yet, I still love them. I still pray for them. I still delight in them.

Before time began the God of the universe set his love upon you. He looked at you with favor and delight. He knew your shortcomings. He knew your faults. He knew where you would fail and where you would rebel. And he loved you. He nit you together in your mothers womb and he loved you—even before you every knew of him!

He Wrote You A Love Letter

Just yesterday I made it a goal for myself to begin writing love letters and notes to my unborn child. It is my goal to have written hundreds of letters, words of encouragement, poems, love songs, apologies, and so much more to my child. And by the time they are mature enough to read them, or perhaps on their wedding day, I will give them a box of these letters.

The fascinating thing is that while I was writing my first letter, I could not help but weep with joy. It struck me, I was writing a love letter to my first child whom I love. I was writing a story to someone I love dear who does not yet know me. I was writing a poem that some day soon they would comprehend.

Our Father in heaven has written you a love letter. He has written you a story of his extravagant love and delight in you. He has written you psalms, songs, and poetry—all to communicate his vast affections for you. And you know what? He wrote all of it— with you in mind—before you were ever born. He loved you so much that he wrote down his gracious songs for your encouragement and salvation!

He Wants The Best For You

When I think about my little child I want nothing but the best for them. I want them to be well taken care of. I want them to be physically healthy. I want them to trust in my love and leadership. I want them to pursue their dreams. I want them to fall in love with Jesus. As a father, I am built to long for those things for my children.

In the same way, our Father in heaven, desires the best for you. He wants your joy and happiness. He wants you safety and security. And ultimately, that can only be truly found in his presence.
